Description

“Depicted are two intimate couples on a giant black carpet! Look for the striking (Chinese) hair-pin of the woman in the rear.”

Kunimaro was a very talented student of Kunisada and a master of Kunimaro II. For the illustrations from this series Kunimaro used elements from Chinese, Korean and possibly Ryukyuan cultures displaying a variety of odd looking objects and designs !

"This group of shunga belongs to a three-volume hansi-bon entitled Nyogo no Shima (Takara) Irifune, a work first atrributed to Kuniyoshi, then assigned by Fukuda (1974) to Kunimaro I, an artist active around 1850-1875 who was the pupil of Kunisada and who is noted as the author of yokohama, the ukiyo-e prints of the late period representing the foreigners in the port of Yokohama from the year in which it opened, in 1859, to the first years of the 1880s". (p. 151-153 in 'Shunga, the Erotic Art of Japan' by Marco Fagioli)
